A hybrid solvent for ICP-OES analysis of oils
ASOSolv is a high-purity organic solvent that bridges oil-based sample matrices and aqueous certified reference materials (CRMs) for ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy) analysis. Laboratories have traditionally used petroleum-based solvents and oil analysis diluents to prepare standards and dilute oil samples. These can raise concerns about analyst safety, odour, volatility and environmental impact. Inorganic Ventures developed ASOSolv as a safer, more flexible alternative.
ASOSolv works with both aqueous CRMs and traditional organometallic standards, so a laboratory can choose the calibration approach that suits its workflow. The solvent blank is used to dilute oil samples and standards and as a blank in oil analysis.
Key features
- Hybrid solvent: Compatible with both aqueous CRMs and traditional organometallic standards.
- Direct dilution workflows: Supports preparing calibration standards and diluted oil samples for rapid ICP-OES analysis. The Inorganic Ventures white paper describes a workflow using ASOSolv spiked with cobalt and yttrium internal standards.
- Low trace metal background: Trace metallic impurities (TMI) are characterized, and Inorganic Ventures reports TMI data for 65 elements, including sulfur, to help support low detection limits.
- Sulfur compatibility: Preparing standards from aqueous CRMs helps reduce the sulfur background that traditional organometallic oil standards can contribute.
- Working standard stability: Inorganic Ventures describes excellent working standard stability and states a 2-year expiration, compared with 1 year for organometallic alternatives.
- Reduced carbon build-up: Inorganic Ventures states ASOSolv produces no significant carbon deposits on the ICP-OES torch injector.
- Bio-based starting materials: Made from renewable, bio-derived materials, according to Inorganic Ventures.
- Accredited producer: Produced by Inorganic Ventures, an ISO 17034 and ISO/IEC 17025 accredited manufacturer, with a Certificate of Analysis provided for every lot.
Ideal for
- Edible oils and food-grade lipid matrices
- Industrial oils and machinery oils
- Wear metals and additive metals in lubricating oils
- Direct dilution ICP-OES workflows and low-level trace metals testing
- Methods Inorganic Ventures lists as aligned with ASOSolv workflows: ASTM D5185, ASTM D4951, ASTM D5708, ISO 21033, ISO 10540-3 and FDA EAM 4.4

Choosing the right size
The ASOSolv solvent blank is available in three sizes: 500 mL, 1 US gallon (about 3.8 L) and 5 US gallon (about 18.9 L). Check the size and part number when ordering. For calibration, see the 33-element ASOS calibration kits, which are diluted 10x with ASOSolv.
